Monero confirmations measure how many blocks secure an XMR transaction, counting the block that includes it as the first confirmation. Standard received XMR stays locked for 10 blocks, roughly 20 minutes, before you can spend it. On SwapRocket, you can swap BTC for XMR from your own wallet and receive XMR at the address you provide, without connecting your wallet.
Key points
- An unconfirmed Monero transaction has not yet been included in a block.
- Ordinary received XMR must satisfy a 10-block unlock rule before it can be spent.
- Monero targets one block every two minutes, but individual block intervals vary.
- A wallet can show received XMR in its total balance before including it in its unlocked balance.
How many confirmations does Monero need?
Monero's standard answer is a 10-block unlock wait for ordinary received XMR, commonly described as needing 10 confirmations. A transaction can already be confirmed and visible in your wallet before its outputs are available to spend.
A confirmation is evidence that a transaction has been included in the blockchain, with later blocks adding depth. Confirmation is therefore not the same thing as permission to spend the received coins.
| Transaction state | What has happened | Can you spend the incoming XMR? |
|---|---|---|
| Unconfirmed | The transaction has been broadcast but is not in a block | No |
| Confirmed but locked | The transaction is in a block, but its outputs have not reached the required age | No |
| Unlocked | The ordinary output-age requirement has been met | Yes, subject to sufficient funds for the new transaction and its fee |
Use your wallet's unlocked balance as the practical spending check. For asset information and supported swap pairs, see the Monero asset page.
Why is received XMR locked for 10 blocks?
Received XMR is locked because Monero enforces a minimum age for ordinary transaction outputs before they can be spent. The 10-block delay gives newly created outputs time to settle into the blockchain before another transaction depends on them.
An output is a unit of value created by a transaction and controlled by its recipient's keys. A short blockchain reorganization can replace recent blocks, so immediately spending a newly created output would make the follow-on transaction depend on a very recent part of the chain.
The standard wait is a network rule, not a discretionary hold added by your wallet or SwapRocket. Changing wallets or receiving a smaller payment does not remove the output-age requirement.
Monero targets a block interval of two minutes, making ten blocks roughly twenty minutes. Mining is probabilistic, however, so blocks do not arrive on an exact schedule and the wait can be shorter or longer.
The estimate also excludes any time a transaction spends waiting for its first block. Twenty minutes from broadcast is therefore not a guaranteed spending deadline.
What is the difference between locked and unlocked XMR?
A Monero wallet's total balance can include both locked and unlocked XMR, while its unlocked balance represents funds eligible to be spent. Received XMR can belong to your wallet without being ready to fund another transaction.
Wallet labels differ, but the important distinction is between ownership and availability. A larger total balance does not override a smaller unlocked balance when you try to send.
Example: Your wallet has 2 XMR already unlocked, and you receive another 1 XMR. After the wallet detects the payment, it may show a total balance of 3 XMR while the unlocked balance remains 2 XMR until the new output matures.
You can still spend eligible older outputs while the new payment is locked. Your available funds must also cover the transaction fee, so the unlocked balance is not necessarily the maximum amount you can enter as a recipient payment.
Sending XMR can create locked change as well. Monero spends selected outputs and returns any remainder to your wallet as a new change output, which must mature like other ordinary new outputs.
Example: A transaction consumes a 2 XMR output to pay a recipient 0.5 XMR. The change, approximately 1.5 XMR minus the transaction fee, is newly created and temporarily locked, even though you did not send that remainder to someone else.
How do Monero confirmations affect swap timing?
Monero confirmations affect when you can fund a swap with newly received XMR and when you can spend an XMR payout. A swap's processing status and your wallet's unlocked balance describe different stages of the process.
SwapRocket swaps typically take 5 to 30 minutes, mostly depending on how quickly the deposited coin confirms. That typical processing window is not a promise that an XMR payout will already be unlocked and ready for another transaction.
When a swap pays out XMR
For a BTC to XMR swap, the Bitcoin deposit must be processed before the XMR payout reaches your receiving wallet. Once the payout is included in a Monero block, the received outputs still need to satisfy Monero's unlock rule.
The XMR may therefore appear in your wallet before you can send it elsewhere. If you intend to make a payment immediately after the swap, plan around the unlocked balance rather than the first appearance of the payout.
When a swap takes in XMR
For an XMR to BTC swap, your sending wallet needs enough unlocked XMR to fund the deposit and its network fee. XMR you have just received may be visible but unavailable for that deposit.
After you send, the swap deposit is a separate transaction with its own confirmation progress. The 10-block wallet rule does not establish a provider's deposit-acceptance threshold, so follow the order's status rather than assuming an exact processing milestone from your wallet balance.
Avoid treating two consecutive swaps as one continuous transfer. An XMR payout from the first swap must become spendable before you can use those same funds to deposit into the second.
How do you check a Monero transaction's confirmations?
You can check Monero confirmations in your wallet's transaction details or by looking up the transaction ID in a Monero block explorer. Your wallet is the better place to confirm whether received XMR has become spendable.
- Check wallet synchronization. Make sure your wallet and its connected node have caught up with the network. A wallet scanning older blocks can show an outdated balance or confirmation count.
- Open the transaction history. Select the relevant incoming or outgoing payment and inspect its status, block height and confirmation information, where available.
- Copy the transaction ID. Use the hash identifying that specific transaction, not your receiving address or the swap order ID.
- Look up the hash in a Monero block explorer. Check whether the transaction is still in the transaction pool or has been included in a block. An included transaction should have an inclusion height and may have a displayed confirmation count.
- Check the unlocked balance again. A growing confirmation count shows blockchain progress, but the wallet's spending status tells you whether the funds are available for your next send.
In the Monero command-line wallet, the balance command reports the balance and unlocked balance. This provides a direct way to distinguish coins the wallet recognizes from coins it can currently spend.
An explorer lookup is not proof that a payment belongs to your wallet; see the Monero privacy guide for the visibility limits. Never enter a recovery phrase or private spend key into a block explorer.
Why is XMR still locked after about 20 minutes?
XMR can remain locked after twenty minutes because the unlock rule counts blocks, not elapsed wall-clock time. Slow block arrivals, delayed initial inclusion or an unsynchronized wallet can make the wait look longer than expected.
Check the cause in this order rather than immediately sending another transaction. A second payment will create another set of outputs with its own waiting period.
- Check whether the transaction has entered a block. Time spent unconfirmed does not satisfy the output-age requirement.
- Check actual blockchain progress. Ten target block intervals are an estimate, not a countdown enforced by a clock.
- Check wallet and node synchronization. If the blockchain has advanced but your wallet has not, let the wallet catch up before interpreting its locked-balance display.
- Check which output is locked. The locked amount may be change from a recent outgoing payment, not the incoming payment you are watching.
If a synchronized wallet still reports an unexpected lock, retain the transaction ID and review the transaction details with the wallet's support resources. If the issue concerns a SwapRocket order, contact support@swaprocket.io with the order details and transaction ID, never your recovery phrase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Monero confirmation questions usually concern the difference between a recorded payment and spendable outputs. The answers below apply to ordinary wallet transfers unless a separate rule is explicitly identified.
Does Monero need 10 or 60 confirmations?
Ordinary received XMR has a standard 10-block unlock requirement, while newly mined block rewards have a separate 60-block maturity rule. A normal wallet payment or swap payout is not a newly mined block reward.
Can I pay a higher fee to unlock XMR faster?
A higher transaction fee cannot shorten Monero's output-age requirement. Fees concern transaction inclusion, while unlocking depends on blocks being added after the output is created.
Does my wallet have to stay open while XMR unlocks?
Your Monero wallet does not have to stay open for the blockchain to advance or for outputs to mature. When you reopen the wallet, it must synchronize before it can display the current unlocked balance accurately.
Can I spend older XMR while a new payment is locked?
Older unlocked XMR remains spendable while a separate incoming payment is locked. Your wallet must have enough eligible funds for both the amount you send and the network fee.
Can I cancel a confirmed XMR payment during the lock?
The Monero unlock wait is not a cancellation or refund window. Once a payment is confirmed, the sender cannot reclaim it simply because the recipient's outputs are still locked.
Do 10 confirmations make a Monero payment irreversible?
Ten confirmations do not create an absolute guarantee against a blockchain reorganization. The unlock requirement establishes when ordinary outputs become eligible for spending, while additional blocks continue to add depth to the transaction.
What should you check before a BTC to XMR swap?
Before a BTC to XMR swap, check that your receiving wallet is synchronized and allow time for the payout's 10-block unlock wait. SwapRocket is not offered to residents of the United States or the United Kingdom.
Use the BTC to XMR exchange to check the live estimate and minimum and maximum amounts, then receive XMR in your own wallet. Keep the payout transaction ID so you can distinguish arrival from spendability.
